Celebrating Community Spirit: The Operation Labyrinth Restoration Project

Introduction to Operation Labyrinth

Operation Labyrinth took place from July 25-27, 2025, as an extension of Dr. Katayoun Dowlatshahi’s community engagement for her public art commission in Catterick Garrison. This project presents a powerful testament to community collaboration and rejuvenation.

Restoring the Royal British Legion Memorial

At the heart of this initiative was the restoration of a derelict Royal British Legion memorial, located in Coronation Park, Catterick Garrison. Working alongside the Veterans Community Working Party, we made significant strides to bring this memorial back to life, ensuring it serves as a lasting tribute to those who served. The involvement of local families and community members greatly enriched the project.

A Collective Effort

The project saw participation from a diverse group, including council officers, serving personnel, cadets, and even two Swiss visitors who were traveling through North Yorkshire after spending time with Dr. Dowlatshahi in North Norfolk. Their contributions underscored the importance of collaboration and unity within our community. Additionally, local charity Military Craftsmanship made benches for the area, funded by North Yorkshire Council, emphasizing the spirit of giving back.

Ultimately, this restoration project is not just about reviving a memorial; it represents a community asset restored for the community, by the community. Coronation Park now features a beautifully restored memorial that enhances the area and complements other planned improvements throughout the park and Shute Road this year.
